Winter fishing in Port Phillip and Western Port

By on June 12th, 2020

Winter fishing in Port Phillip and Western Port was all about school blue fin, crackin’ calamari, thumping whiting and gummies, gummies, gummies!

The week ahead…

Winter can be a great time to fish and these sunny days make it all the more enjoyable. After the full moon last Saturday the tides are now stronger, providing quite a few options for the week ahead to get stuck into some great fishing. Looks like we have got some wind around over the weekend and into early next week before it comes good again!

First up, it’s all about our local school blue fin tuna. It has been an anxious wait to get see if they were still in our local waters when fishing restrictions were eased… and they are! Gawaine and Chris had great sessions over the long weekend and all the details are in their reports.

Gummy sharks are also a fantastic option and this moon phase is a great time to chase them. The bigger tides mean there will be some big fish around and, as always, the boys have all the details to get you on to them, including rigs, baits, gear and best times and areas to fish.

These cooler months will also see the calamari fishing fire up right in certain areas of Port Phillip Bay and Western Port and along with some big King George whiting. Chris points you to the right spots on the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port, Aaron always gets you onto them on the west side of the bay and Gawaine has got you covered in Western Port and beyond – check out his session on the ocean whiting further down too.

The winter months also provide us with awesome pinkie snapper fishing with heaps of pan sized fish available in many areas of the bay. Chris gives you all the details. Such great fun on the light rods and as long as they are over 28cm and under 40cm you can keep up to ten of them!

Next live chat next Thursday

Yes, it’s that time again. Gawaine will be talking all things gummy sharks on Thursday June 18 at 7pm. We introduced our live chat tutorials to provide our members with some extra benefits during the fishing restrictions and they were such a success, we just had to keep them going.

This is such a great opportunity to experience the benefits and information of a live workshop all from the comfort of your home. Type in your questions if you need clarity or just sit back and watch and learn. Even better, they stay up all week, so you can replay it whenever you like.

Ocean whiting

We headed offshore this week filming ocean whiting. We got some great footage on how and where to go about it and even pulled in some thumping whiting before a seven gill thought the burley cage was lunch and spoiled some of the fun.
